Slum Survivor (ASKY)

Saturday 17th July 2010

ASC Y (youth and leaders) are going to hold a "Slum Survivor" Weekend from about 5pm on Friday 16 July to 10am on Sunday 18 July. They will then use this experience and what they have learnt as the focus of the Youth Service at 6.30pm on 18 July. Download documents available here!

What is Slum Survivor?
Slum Survivor is an initiative put forward by Tearfund and Soul Survivor to support "Soul Action" to respond to God's heart for justice. Slum Survivor is a challenge to spend a few days the way a billion spend a lifetime. It is a simulation experience designed to help young people connect with the lives of some of the world's poorest people.

What is the point of it?
By living in a temporary shelter, eating a limited diet and facing tough challenges young people:

  • raise funds by gaining sponsorship - the money raised goes to Soul Action partner projects working in the world's poorest communities
  • raise awareness about poverty and the lives that a billion people live
  • spend time in prayer, reading God's word, learning about life in temporary settlements and connect with God's heart for justice

ASC Y's Slum Survivor Proposal
ASC Y will:

  • build their own temporary shelters and live in them from Friday evening to Sunday morning
  • the temporary shelters would be about 2m x 2m
  • each would house 4 young people (boys and girls in separate shelters)
  • they would have to stick to strict rules (no luxuries at all), eat very basic food (lentils and rice) and undertake challenges to earn some privileges (again very basic - eg an orange or some fruit juice)
  • all of this would be under adult supervision (including a waking watch over night)

They would need to have access to:

  • One tap
  • One toilet
  • An area for private washing (bucket washes only)
  • Clear open space for cooking or a kitchen and fridge to store food (which of these options needs to be decided)
  • Space to construct the slum houses (2m x 2m for 4 people -3 shelters in total)
  • An open grassy area for some of the challenges

ASC Y are hoping to use the car park of the Parish Hall to build and live in their temporary shelters.
