We now have the go-ahead

How much will the project cost?

The whole Garden Project comes in two parts.

Phase 1, which we hope to start soon, involves the removal and re siting of the majority of the gravestones from the front of the yard, following the granting of full permissions from the Diocese.

Five of the significant memorials will remain to give a sense that this is a graveyard. Smaller memorials will be placed around the low front walls. The majority will be sited in the rear yard along the boundary walls. All of this will be plotted and recorded. In addition a survey of all graves and re sited stones has been undertaken and a digital record will be prepared.

This 1st phase - removal of the stones and rough levelling of the yard to make safe will cost in the region of £18,000 and will be undertaken by Calderdale Council Bereavement Services division.

We have been promised two small grants so far from the Bearders Trust and Calderdale Community Foundation towards the project and through the
diligence of our treasurer Jim Pattinson in assessing dedicated reserves, we have so far raised approximately £13,000 towards the £18,000 cost of this phase.

Phase 2 of the Garden Project involves a more careful contouring of the cleared yard with the following additions;

Re seeding/turfing and a planting scheme focussing on bushes and plants to enhance the appearance of the church and its northern surroundings and encourage wildlife.

Two new seating areas with bespoke benches.

New notice boards, including one to chart a brief history of the church and
illustrate its interior. Renovated pathways with a specially designed area for the front of church for use at baptisms, weddings etc. New fully glazed front doors and redecorated porch with new

This 2nd phase will cost in the region of £20-25,000, which we hope to raise through further grants and we are encouraging individuals, groups, church and community to help raise money towards this project.  It is possible to fund particular parts of the project such as planting, benches, doors and decorating etc.

We hope to see the second phase of the Welcome Garden Project begin in Summer, and reach completion by late Autumn 2019.
